March 2023, Hurricane 'Freddy' hits Malawi

Tropical storm Freddy has caused severe flooding and landslides in Malawi, leaving hundreds dead and injured.The south of the country has been particularly hard hit. Houses and roads have been swept away or severely damaged. Many areas in the country are inaccessible such as Blantyre, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje, Phalombe, Thyolo and Zomba.

Hurricane 'Freddy'

Malawi is currently suffering a massive disaster as a result of the extreme flooding caused by tropical storm 'Freddy'. After two days of heavy rainfall and flooding, the situation in some parts of Mangochi has resulted in more than 300 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours. The floods have had devastating effects on villages, where houses have been damaged, crops destroyed and people killed or injured by the collapse of buildings and being swept away by rivers. Fierce photos and videos are being shared on social media, and communities are reporting on the dramatic effects of the floods. The impact of this disaster goes beyond the immediate effects on the affected communities. Malawi is also now facing a nationwide power shortage as hydropower plants have been shut down due to the floods. Unfortunately, 326 people have already died as a result of this disaster and the president has declared a state of emergency.

What is the situation now?

The situation is particularly alarming because these floods are occurring during the largest cholera outbreak in Malawi's history. This increases the urgency to act quickly to reduce the impact of this disaster and help those affected. Fortunately, the school is unharmed and children are able to resume classes as soon as possible. This does not apply to all children, as the affected families are in urgent need of bed, bath and bread. As a Foundation, our local advisors are currently surveying the situation so that first aid can begin to be provided in the form of: distributing corn, renovating damaged buildings, etc. The importance of the first necessity of life is paramount, because without this security a child cannot learn!
